We wasted no time beginning our explorations of the harvests, history, and landscapes found in the great Northwest. An early start provided us with the opportunity to venture far into Hells Canyon, the deepest of any in North America. There, we not only experienced dramatic basalt formations that will dominate the rest of our voyage along the Columbia and Snake Rivers, but also got our first glimpse into the extraordinary story behind Lewis and Clark expedition. For thousands of years, a tribe called the Nez Perce inhabited the areas surrounding Hells Canyon, as evidenced by the ancient petroglyphs we saw adorning the rocks along the river. This same tribe aided our pioneering explorers through the treacherous terrains of the Snake River almost exactly one hundred and twelve years ago to the day. And just like that intrepid expedition team, tomorrow we continue our journey down the Snake, westward towards the sea.
