The off-and-on drizzle/rain didn’t diminish today’s options. We offered hikes along the famed black sand beach, 4x4 SuperJeep tours to the Valley of the Waterfalls, a tour to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, and a cultural walk through Djúpivogur, a city with numerous museums and galleys.
The hikes were serene, with calm conditions painted 50 shades of grey along a long black beach interspersed with hillocks of green grass.
The cultural walk started by walking along the famous Eggs of Merry Bay, carved granite replicas of eggs from 34 species of seabirds nesting in the area. Then we continued along the harbor to the stone garden and ended with a tasting of traditional Icelandic food (dried fish with butter and hákarl, or fermented shark).
The lagoon tour consisted of slowly cruising among and around icebergs that calved off the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier and subsequently drifted into the lagoon. Numerous kittiwakes flitted about and rested on the icebergs.
The SuperJeep tour was action-packed, challenging our seatbelts as we drove through small rivers with the water level rising above the watertight doors, up and down steep inclines, and offroad over ruts and rocks. The view of the many waterfalls was spectacular, as was the entire day!
