It was the explorers first morning at sea. The day was beautiful and started with a presentation by Jose Calvo on “An Introduction to Smart Phone Photography”. After a relaxed morning following long days of travel for most, the expedition truly began.
After lunch, the next stop was to Flatey, which means “flat island” and that was the explorers first stop on National Geographic Explorer’s last circumnavigation around Iceland for this season. Flatey was as beautiful as always and shone brightly. The colorful houses give a unique look to the island, along with the church and the oldest library in Iceland. The church is quite special since the painted ceiling features people that have lived on the island.
This small town not only has beautiful houses, but also has greatly diverse birdlife. Most of the chicks have fledged already and you can spot them in their “pre-teen” years, including the red-necked phalarope and the Arctic tern.
After a beautiful dinner, we headed to Látrabjarg, which are the largest bird cliffs in Europe and offer absolutely stunning scenery.
