From tiny flies pollinating meadow buttercups to the largest of this area’s sea lions crammed upon a rocky shoreline, our day was one of extremes.
Our morning at Fox Creek at the northern end of Alaska’s Chichigof Island dawned calm and clear, offering hiking, paddling, and opportunities for capturing choice photography. Whether dipping into the shade of the temperate rainforest, kayaking over glass-calm water, the morning passed with not only dry, but exceptionally warm weather. Hardly a complaint in this corner of the world.
While some clouds rolled in by afternoon, we were already dressed and ready for an adventurous Zodiac cruise in the Inian Islands. Skirting the edge of the open Pacific, our midday outings twined us between numerous tiny islands, through large groups of sea birds and past raucous haul outs of Steller sea lions. With tidal currents adding a bounce to our boats we skipped across the sea before setting course for our big day in Glacier Bay National Park starting first thing tomorrow.
