A glorious day greeted us with a spectacular sunrise. Through the early part of the day we passed the small island of Porto Santo and then the northern side of the main island of Madeira.

In the afternoon we toured the capital city of Funchal, first visiting the embroidery store and then the very active and colorful local market. Many different kinds of fresh produce were being sold, including a few rather strange tropical fruits. One of the most interesting things in the market was the local deep water fish called "espada." Many of the restaraunts serve this dish as a delicacy.

A few people also were interested in some of the local handicrafts such as wicker baskets and the unique local hats. In the evening we were treated to a local dinner ashore and entertained by a folkloric performance of fado and dancing.
