Last evening we left the Port of Lisbon and set a southwesterly course toward the island of Madeira. During the day we remained on this course, experiencing very calm seas with light winds. Sunrise was quite lovely although many people arose slowly after their long days of travel getting to the ship. During the day we learned about our first port of call, Madeira, and observed a few species of pelagic seabirds.
In contrast to this morning, everyone was wide awake and thoroughly enjoyed our beautiful first sunset at sea. As the sun dipped below the western horizon, Captain Cardestig hosted an enjoyable 'Welcome Aboard' cocktail party and introduced the ship's officers.
