Helsinki, Finland

Decisions, decisions. Would the salmon plate or the sea-gourmet plate be the better choice for lunch today? These black-headed gulls joined us in checking out the colourful and varied fisherman’s market in downtown Helsinki today. However, unlike the gulls, our choices went beyond those of the palate with two options for activities this morning: explore the city centre with it’s charming atmosphere, or travel out to Suomenlinna Island for a chance to walk around the 18th century fortress that guards the entrance to Helsinki’s extensive harbour. Those who took the town option strolled around the clean, quietly bustling centre of one of Europe’s strongest economies, while the fortress folks combined an interesting slice of human history with some fabulous natural beauty – the area around the fort was home to many species of birds and wildflowers.
