Hellemobotn, Norway

Norway is rightly famous for its fiords. Day after day, we cruise along through splendid scenery before making a stop somewhere to enjoy some of Norway’s magnificence in more depth and detail. Today we eased into the Tysfiord region where the varied scenery kept us busy from before breakfast until after dinner. First up was the magnificent mountain of Stetinden – dramatically shaped with vertical sides and a summit as flat as an anvil. (So impressive that Norwegians, who are perhaps more spoiled for scenery than any other nation, voted it the most beautiful mountain in Norway.) In the afternoon, we went ashore in Hellemobotn for some of the best hiking of the trip. The lush valley at the head of this fiord was littered with waterfalls and whether we chose to walk a short, medium, or long distance, we had natural beauty all around us. The trails through the forest led to several cascades where recently melted snow poured forth from the steep granite slopes above. Pictured is the view that the “long hikers” enjoyed from about 280 m (924 ft) as they descended a particularly large slab of granite.
