Floreana and Isabela Islands

What a wonderful day we had visiting two of the most spectacular places in Galápagos. We began our day visiting a very historical place known as Post Office Bay, one of the favourites for whaling ships. Ancient sailors used to stop here to drop letters for their relatives in a wide barrel, then other sailors would pick up those letters and hand deliver them. This tradition still continues today, and some of our guests took a few to deliver as well.

Later this morning we snorkelled and enjoyed the company of sea lions, sharks, rays, and lots of fish. Those who didn’t want to be in the water went on the Glass-bottom boat and had a great time watching the underwater world from above. We also saw some Galápagos sea lions feeling a little bit lazy and sun bathing on the cliffs of Champion islet (see picture).

The afternoon was equally amazing as we sailed toward the island of Isabela and we found an immense blue whale, which is the largest mammal on earth and there are not many reports of this incredible animal around these waters.

Once we reached Puerto Villamil, we split up into groups for long, medium and short walks. Each group saw the flat shape land tortoises and their breeding program in captivity, and learnt a lot about the different subspecies of Isabela Island and found unique species of plants, especially those of the arid low lands.

One of the most incredible moments of the day was finding a big group of Greater flamingos on one of the many brackish water lagoons right in the middle of town. We are getting ready to go to our next destination on the western side of the islands.
