Floreana Island
The mysterious Island of Floreana, as this island is often refered to, had indeed a ghostly sheet of oddness as you looked at it. It was here in post office bay where so many past travelers experienced their first contact with the islands, beginning a new way of life, however unsuccessful it turned out to be. The non-prosperous life that this unfortunate travelers had in this island, oblige them to leave their dreams of a better life behind, and those were the luckiest cases, because the island has the history of not only devouring dreams but to destroy the dreamers as well.
Back in the late nineteen twenties, a non-so-young couple from Germany were convinced by their own stupidity that the island would be the long sought-after paradise that they had been looking for. After several years of living on the island, their dreams ended up in despair for both of them: death for one and a sentence to spend the rest of their life in a mental institution for the survivor… certainly not the intriguing paradise they had envisioned. This is just one of many historical examples about Floreana and its brief inhabitants. There have been many books published already about the intricate life of the Floreana inhabitants - and believe me, each is juicier than the other!
But Floreana is not only an island were everything goes wrong. It is nowadays considered one of the most beautiful places in the Galápagos, not only because of its enchanted surrounding hills, but because of its natural inhabitants. Many different species congregate in this paradise of wildlife, combining colors and shapes - resulting in a texture that is hard to find anywhere else.
The Flamingoes for instance are true representatives of the island, as for many centuries or even millennia, have been occupying the shore lagoons as their main breeding grounds.
The island has made its point clear, no humans have been given the right to live a prosperous life here, but for the animals, let’s say that there is a welcome sign posted on the front door.
