Bartolome and James Islands

These two islands are formed by an interesting group of volcanoes and a series of parasitic cones. Along the shoreline of these two places it is easy to observe young lava flows mixed with different types of sandy beaches. The contrast in its geology is so fascinating in term of colors and shapes. It isn’t hard to picture the way they formed, some thousand and some million years ago.

Today was a bright sunny day, which is why all the minerals in the lava field where shining, making it easy to recognize some of the elements, which are the main components of the Galápagos’s geology. However, the best of this was the fact that water was crystal clear, and therefore fish’s colors were vivid. The drop off along the coast was full of marine invertebrates and equinoderms. After snorkeling, something else got our attention: the fact that some geological features resembled the shape or figures of some animals or people, and the skin of certain animals resembled the surface of lava flows. The top of pinnacle rock looks like an Indian face and the skin around the eye of a marine iguana looks like the surface of an a'a lava field.
