Española Island

This was our last day in the Enchanted Islands, and this time the National Geographic Islander took us to the oldest island in Galápagos, Española. After one week exploring the archipelago, most of our guests never thought there would be so much excitement even towards the end of our trip.

Some of our guests had a very early wake up call because they chose the pre-breakfast kayaking outing. They were so happy to do it, since kayaking along the westernmost part of Española Island with animals just beginning their daily foraging and a great sunrise seemed the perfect beginning to a day.

Just a little bit later all of our guests were ready to go out, this time for our snorkeling experience. And for the non-snorkelers, one of the most beautiful white sandy beaches in Galápagos awaited them! Once everybody was on board we repositioned our ship to a different location for our very last excursion in the Galápagos.

This island particularly has a very high degree of endemism, and this is due to the time animals and plants have had to evolve into different and unique species. Among some of the endemic creatures that we encountered during our afternoon walk were marine iguanas, Española mockingbirds, Española lava Lizards, Española land snakes, and Waved Albatross.

I am sure that after all these experiences during this week, the Galápagos will be in our hearts forever...
