Floreana Island

The morning started early at Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island. We woke up with the colors of sunrise decorating the dramatic Devil’s Crown, a very old tuff cone.

The morning visit brought some unusual colors to our day! We found a brackish water lagoon decorated with some pink flamingos. Some of them walked very close to us. They were searching in the water for microscopic shrimp with their funny beaks, which work as perfect filters.

We walked from a green beach to a white coralline beach, one of the main nesting sites for the Pacific green sea turtle. We walked along the beach while enjoying this magical scenery.

The Zodiac ride had a main goal—to find the Floreana mockingbird! A very small population survives on the islet of Champion. We were successful in our mission, and now we have checked three of the four species of mockingbirds off our list! Just as good as Darwin did!

Snorkeling with sharks and sea lions was a highlight, not to mention the hundreds of colorful fish.

In the afternoon we became part of an old tradition. The “post office” barrel has helped people communicate for over 200 years, and we continued with this tradition by leaving our postcards in the barrel and taking the old postcards that had been left by other visitors… there is just one rule: you have to hand deliver them!

That’s Floreana: A mixture of color and sceneries, the island where human history gets combined with the beauty of this unique nature.
