Española Island

This is our first full day of our expedition in the magical Galápagos! We started early in the morning at sunrise with early risers. This is the basaltic northern coast of Española, great for its landscapes and wildlife on the dark cliffs. We boarded our sea kayaks to explore this new place.

The weather was great for every activity we did. It was a cool morning for the kayakers, but later on it was warm and the sun shined for snorkelers and those of us that explored the white sandy beach. This beach is home to Galápagos sea lions. At this time, they are in their breeding season and it is common to see sea lion pups everywhere!

Right before noontime we returned to the ship and what a surprise! An Ecuadorian lunch was waiting for us, and it included the different flavors of the four regions of Ecuador!
In the afternoon, we landed at Punta Suarez for a long walk exploring the shore of Española Island. It not only has stunning landscapes, but it also has large nesting colonies of seabirds. Nazca boobies are here by the thousands! As well as swallow tailed gulls and the magnificent waved albatross. The waved albatross happens to be endemic to Española Island and it is the largest bird of the Galápagos.

We returned just as the sun was setting; it was time to celebrate this magnificent day with a cocktail in hand. Tomorrow will be another great experience and I can’t wait for it!
