Isabela & Fernandina Islands

What a wonderful day we all had today.

Early in the morning we started our day with an optional call, our Expedition Leader Cindy Manning announces a pod of common dolphins and our captain Fausto Hinojosa maneuvers for a close encounter. Meanwhile our guests arrive on the bridge deck and find themselves in the open ocean, and suddenly there it was, Roca Redonda, an island which appears to be a cylindrical structure of irregular lava feature with impressive vertical walls as a reminder of the power of volcanoes. This rock is the home for many sea birds which are flying about like shearwaters, terns, gulls, frigate birds just to name a few.

As we have our succulent breakfast we sail from the northern hemisphere toward the equator, our guests were baptized and no longer are they called “polliwogs” but instead “shellbacks” from the Galápagos Islands, we had a blast.

Our expedition continues while panga riding the shore of Isabela Island which give us an opportunity to enjoy the two flightless birds of this archipelago: the Galápagos penguin and the flightless cormorant standing among the largest marine iguanas in their breeding colors, blue footed boobies, turtles and breathtaking landscapes. Once back, we suited up for the underwater realm, yes! Snorkeling was next and sea turtles are on this menu. What a thrill to have them so close, coexisting and sharing this world with us.

When we are all back on board and lunching, our officers reposition the National Geographic Polaris to our next island, Fernandina.

Fernandina is a pristine Island with unique fearless living things; low tide, the sun setting slowly on the horizon while surrounded by volcanoes and our guests full of joy. That was the setting for an unforgettable experience. Solid lava flows and iguanas, blue sky and water confusing the aquamarine darkness from the flightless cormorant’s eye, and much more. My dear reader, believe me, there is much more, you just have to be here and then you’ll know.

We end our day by having our recap, a briefing about the next day and a delicious barbeque dinner under a wonderful gentle night.

Our expedition continues and this wonderful place has much to offer, our guests are wondering if this day could be topped and ho boy! they are in for a wonderful surprise.
