Bartolmé & Santiago Islands

This morning we had an early wake up in order to climb to the top of Bartolomé without the heat of the late morning during this time of year.

During the walk we learned about the differences between types of parasitic cones, such as spatter, cinder and tuff cones. On the top of the island; around 114 meters high; we had a nice view of the central area of the archipelago on which we identified 7 different islands and a few islets.

We were then rewarded with a great outdoor breakfast on the Teak deck. Shortly after, we were given many choices to enjoy the beach. Some of us walked along the southern beach of Bartolomé where we had the opportunity to see the only land iguana on the on the trail between the two beaches, lucky day.

Back at the snorkeling beach, some remained on the sand there and relaxed, while others went snorkeling. The conditions were perfect, crystal clear water, nice and warm temperature and a lot of underwater activity. We swam with playful sea lions, a couple of white-tipped reef sharks, surgeon’s fish, parrots fish, and sting rays; we had an unforgettable time.

Afternoon came and we arrived at Puerto Egas, as soon as we got to the beach we had a large group of enthusiastic snorkelers, the conditions were not as good as in Bartolomé, but we had a nice time swimming with different kinds of colorful fishes and a couple of sea lions.

After leaving the water we started walking along the trail. On our way we appreciated a wonderful landscape with lovely color contrasts. We had several encounters with coastal sea birds, like wandering tattlers, ruddy turnstones, plovers and oystercatchers in a great environment dominated by marine iguanas. It was a wonderful day.
