Bartolomé & Santiago Islands

Our expedition is coming to an end today but the memories and feelings we have accumulated this week will stay with us forever. Any given visit to this enchanted archipelago provokes in its visitors unforgettable memories. This week we have had many beautiful days, this was truly a “memorable journey of discovery”.

Bartolomé Island, our first destination in the morning, is as near as a dream come true as you can imagine. This small island is very well known for it has some of the most beautiful volcanic landscapes of the archipelago.

Later in the morning we continued with our activities. We did some snorkeling in the calm turquoise waters off the beach of Bartolomé Island; the diversity of marine life at this site is great. Some of us went on a short hike across the island on sand dunes where we found a second beach that was full of life. In this area I had a fabulous personal encounter with a Galápagos lava lizard. I spent some time observing how the small reptile was trapping insects. In order to have a better view and with a lot of patience I laid down in silence, motionless on the sand. It was great! After some minutes I was covered with sticky sand and sweaty under the strong equatorial heat but I had the close up pictures I was looking for and the thrill of observing how the lizard skilfully trapped its food.

In the afternoon after our lunch we set sail to Puerto Egas, a spectacular place located on the northwestern part of Santiago Island. We landed on a black sandy beach where our guests were offered the possibility of practicing snorkelling and a wonderful walk along the coast line of Puerto Egas. Finally we all went back on board with a mix of feelings. We were a little sad because the expedition has come to an end but on the other hand we felt happy to realize that our hearts are filled with joy and hope in the future. Dear friends, you may be leaving the Galápagos but the Galápagos will never leave you.
