Tracy Arm Fjord and Williams Cove
Glacial ice was the theme of today. Our voyage up the beautiful fjord of Tracy Arm was magical. A misty morning gave way to an overcast sky, which was the perfect backdrop to show off brilliant blue icebergs. The ice packed the fjord in front of the South Sawyer Glacier, evidence of active calving. Harbor seals were hauled out on the ice, curiously watching us with their big brown eyes. South Sawyer Glacier did not disappoint…as we cruised in our zodiacs there was more spectacular calving adding to the icepack.
On our way back down the fjord we stopped at an infamous waterfall…Hole in the Wall. We were able to feel the spray of the water as it cascaded down the granite wall.
After lunch we made our way down to Williams Cove where we set off on our first round of hikes in a temperate rainforest. We encountered typical plants like devil’s club and skunk cabbage along the way. We tested our rain boots in the boot-sucking mud and washed them off in the stream, only to get them dirty again in the next patch of mud! Evidence of bears was everywhere….scat (some quite fresh), cow parsnip roots dug up, salmonberry bushes munched on and bear beds in the beach rye.
We also got the chance to kayak for the first time today around an iceberg that had floated more than 20 miles down Tracy Arm Fjord.
