The courting season is now over in this wonderful island of birds, Tower Island -- though a straggler male frigtebird with his red pouch was seen flying overhead -- but the results are everywhere! As unscientific as may be, not even the naturalists can suppress the odd "ooooh, how cute" when confronted everywhere with tiny little balls of down. The great frigatebirds and the red-footed boobies, both of which occur in large colonies on Tower and both of which have tropical breeding strategies, are now at this stage in their cycle. The sounds of the young birds begging for food are all around us, and it is really fascinating to watch how they plunge their beaks all the way down the parent's throat to get the regurgitated fish morsels, though it does make you glad we evolved in a different direction!
