Today was a particularly exciting day for all of us, because we decided to stretch our legs more than usual and search a little bit into the past of the island of Santiago. We visited the area used by the salt mining company created back in the year of 1962.

Three and a half miles of dirt path took us to the edge of the crater where salt was extracted. The company, founded by Hector Egas (with more than one hundred people), made an unsuccessful attempt to settle on the island, which lasted for approximately two years.

By walking this long path, we passed into the interior of the island, a dry scrubland, until we made the rim of the crater and looked down into the shallow salt-water lagoon from which the salt was originally taken. The excursion took us the entire afternoon, and we arrived back at our landing beach at sunset, tired but satisfied.
