The Galapagos Islands are one of the most active oceanic volcanic regions on earth and are rivalled only by Hawaii. Therefore, the dramatic volcanic landscapes, like those that we saw on Bartolome Island this morning, are one of the highlights of any trip in the archipelago. Bartolome is an extremely dry and arid island that supports only a few plant species. Tiquilia nesiotica is one species that was able to colonise this tiny desolate island. These plants are competing for water in this very dry environment and they are often regularly spaced.
