Espanola Island

It is eight o’clock in the morning, and I (a Galápagos Sea Lion) was still sleeping on the fresh white coral sand beach, on the island that the humans call Espanola, at Punta Suarez. The sun was warming me up, and suddenly, I was awakened by the sound of that strange flotation transport (Zodiac), that every day these strange creatures (humans) use for coming to observe us, and to talk about us (The Galápagos Sea Lions). I don’t know why. I licked myself, because a respectable future beach master should be well groomed even if I look so young, three months that is. My tummy also was awakened at the same time, but sadly my mom was not around here for giving a little milk. Late in the night she went out on a fishery excursion.

O.K. I will learn something new today from the beach master, who is in charge of the harem for the next couple of weeks. After exploring the surroundings, I will visit my neighbors, the marine iguanas. I will play a little bit with their tails, and bite them, to train my jaws and to sharpen my teeth, to get in good shape for future fishing when I will do it on my own. I don’t know if they really mind that I visit them everyday, maybe I won’t ask them about that.

Oh my Gosh, what is that? Who is that standing on their rear flippers right on the beach? It looks so strange. Perhaps I’ll get closer to see better. You know a young explorer male Galápagos Sea Lion is very brave and curious at the same time. O.K. Here I go…

She is a Mermaid (Lindblad guest). I haven’t seen one before but I heard about them. She is supposed to have a fishtail, but she lacks it. Maybe she is a Sea girl, something new that I just discovered today, and came from the sea on a panga (local name that we the Galápagos Sea Lions use for the Zodiacs). I will get closer to her and will show her how awesome I am. Maybe she will decide to stay in my harem…
