Floreana and Isabela Islands
Today was simply amazing! Our day began visiting a place called Post Office Bay, at Floreana Island. It is a traditional visitor site in the Galápagos, since the practice of collecting and hand delivering mail started long time ago. At the beginning, it was started by a captain called James Colnett, some time back in the late 1700’s.
After leaving the barrel with some of the post cards for delivering, we went for a Zodiac cruise along “La Loberia” or Sea lion rock. Many “bachelor males” of the Galápagos sea lion species watched over their territories carefully, in that way discouraging other bachelors from coming into it.
We left this wonderful location to visit Champion Islet. The snorkeling was superb and we had the best time doing it! We encountered several species of colorful fish and lots of sea stars adorning the bottom of the sea. The glass bottom boat sounded like a good idea for some of us who did not feel like jumping into the water.
There were literally millions of fish down there, and of course, the Galápagos sea lions appeared too, giving us all a show that we would never forget.
In the afternoon we visited Pto. Villamil located at the southern-most end of Isabela Island. It was quite a unique visit since the Carnival festivities were at their peak. The tradition in Ecuador is to play with water. As we walked down the street, we could observe how almost everyone was walking with his or her clothes soaking wet! The ones who were not where hiding behind fences playing “hide and seek” trying to remain “dry” as long as they could.
Our visit this afternoon started at the Galápagos giant tortoise breeding center. We combined this option with a visit to a beautiful brackish water lagoon. Lots of shore and land birds were found here such as the blue-winged teal, western sand pipers, surfbirds and even a couple of flamingoes.
The book of Galápagos memories is getting bigger and bigger and we are really happy about it!
