Española Island
What an incredible day!
Today was a totally different experience at Espanola Island. With approximately forty kids on board, the normal dynamics of the whole trip has changed quite a bit. We had a very exiting walk and all the kids were very interested to see each and every creature that we found on our path. It is funny that we, the adults, don’t usually pay too much attention to the small, little creatures, but the kids seem to see everything!
During the afternoon, we visited a rock formation called “Tortuga Island,” where some of us decided to do our first deep water snorkeling of the week. We observed some of the endemic fish that we have here in the Galápagos. After snorkeling, we headed to a beautiful white sandy beach where the sea lions were laying all over. Our younger guests enjoyed this place a lot, playing with the sea lions that seemed to be very interested in the kids’ activities. As the kids were playing on the sand, one of the curious sea lions decided to join the fun. The sea lion got so close to one of the kid’s backs that its whiskers touched his ear. At first, it did scare the boy a bit, but then, everyone wanted to have the same unique experience! It was so interesting to notice that the young sea lions were very interested on the younger kids, almost as if a connection was established. Well, I am not a mammal behavior specialist, but all I know is that two species of mammals were having fun at the beach today. The connection has been established and the friendship will remain…I am sure!
