Los Islotes, Espiritu Santo
The first day of our trip visiting the islands and peninsula of Baja California in the Sea of Cortez was, very simply, a lot of fun! After leaving the city of La Paz early in the morning, the Sea Voyager, our home for the week, made her way to a southern beach on the island of Espiritu Santo called Bahia Bonanza. This would be a great spot to get reacquainted with water sports gear that some of us have not used in a while. After breakfast, snorkel gear was handed out and then Zodiacs were made available for trips ashore. After some exploratory walks, during which different aspects of the wonderful Sonoran desert were pointed out to us, we returned to the beach for swimming and snorkeling. Some took right to the activity while others cautiously made their way into the inviting waters over the white sands of Bonanza.
After lunch and a visit by bottlenose dolphins to the bow of the ship during our transit, the anchor was dropped and another chance to snorkel was offered. The morning’s refresher course was well used, as this outing would be with California sea lions, which make Los Islotes a home for the breeding season during the summer months. Zodiac cruises were also offered for close looks at these amazing animals. As you can see, a few of the breeding males appreciated the waters as much as we did.
