Isla San Jose and Isla San Francisco

The morning found us traveling south along the San Jose Channel where we had the opportunity to observe a wonderful sunrise. We looked for marine life while the wind blew from the north.

At midmorning, we arrived at Encantada Beach on the west side of Isla San Jose. We spent two hours, which was enough time for everybody to hike along the arroyo at different paces and lengths. There was also a yoga class on the beach.

Back at the ship, while looking for marine mammals, Pete Pederson gave a presentation about baleen whales, he also considered the species we had seen including humpbacks and blue whales.

For the afternoon, once lunch and shopping were finished, we entered the protected area of Isla San Francisco, where we planned to spend the rest of the day. Here, we had the opportunity to do different activities such as: hikes, tide pooling, and also snorkeling. When we first came to the beach, some shadows were swimming by. We followed them and they happened to be various jumbo squids, of about 3 feet long.

We finished our day with a magnificent barbeque on the beach set up by Bill, our Hotel Manager, and the galley, followed by a bonfire and marshmallows with everybody having a taste of these delicious desserts.

Nice end for this year 2006. Happy New Year’s Eve!
