Columbia River Gorge

Mount Hood rose majestically in the distance as we docked in The Dalles, Oregon for a day of adventure in the Columbia River Gorge. After breakfast, our guests departed the Sea Bird for the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, a local museum that features exhibits spotlighting the rich history of the region. Following the museum, we traveled along the Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway to the Rowena Crest overlook, which provided us with a spectacular view of the Columbia River far below. Later, guests had a chance to bicycle or walk along a restored portion of the highway to the historic Mosier Twin Tunnels. The path wound around dark basalt outcroppings and through groves of big-leaf maples as we made our way to the tunnels.

We met the Sea Bird in Hood River, Oregon. This small town has become a major wind and kite surfing hub as surfers have flocked to the region to take advantage of the breezes that blow up the Columbia River Gorge. As we departed Hood River, we watched surfers skimming across the water on their colorful wind boards.

Our afternoon in the Columbia River Gorge included a trip to the 620 foot Multnomah Falls. Later, we sampled a wide selection of apples and other fruits grown in Hood River as we cruised through the Gorge, their variety and flavor astonishing us. Night fell as we continued downstream on our way to the mouth of the Columbia River and the town of Astoria.
