This afternoon we boarded the M/V Sea Lion for a trip up the Columbia and Snake rivers that will last us 6 days. Before getting to the confluence of the Columbia River we had to travel up the Willamette River, which separates east and west Portland. Portland is known as the city of bridges, and for good reason. We traveled underneath 8 bridges on the Willamette and several more on the Columbia as we headed east towards the Cascade mountain range. The afternoon was bright and sunny as we worked our way under the three in the photo which are the Hawthorne, Morrison, and Burnside. There are bridges for cars and railroads across the Willamette. Another feature seen in the photo is the two green spires, which are part of the convention center for the city of Portland. It was a great start to what is sure to be an exceptional trip along the mighty river of the west.
