Los Inocentes Ranch and Bahia Santa Elena

We disembarked today bright and early towards our morning destination: Rancho Los Inocentes. Located in the tropical moist forest life zone, at the base of an extinct volcano, Orosi Volcano, the ranch dates back to 1890. The actual owners acquired it in 1956 and have been committed to conservation and ecotourism since then.

We had several options once we got there, we could choose to ride the beautiful horses of the ranch, we could take a wagon-pulled-by-a-tractor ride, or we could stay at the ranch’s house by the pool. We got to see monkeys, and birds, ants and butterflies, and tropical dry forest trees. But spider monkeys throwing things at us was definitively our highlight.

We had a delicious barbecue lunch, took a quick dip in the swimming pool, and headed back to the ship.

Trying to get back on the ship, we got a little more of the Costa Rican patriotism than we bargained for… For the five countries in Central America, the independence came on the 15th of September 1821, and as a preparation of this day’s celebration, “the torch of liberty” is carried from Guatemala to Costa Rica. We were behind a torch for quite a while, giving us the opportunity of seeing the local people in their festive mood.

Once on board, we repositioned the ship into a small, but calm bay: Bahia Huevos. Some of us took a Zodiac cruise and others decided to take a cooling dip off the stern. As the sun was setting behind the cloudy horizon, a fantastic double rainbow waved our day goodbye.
