Today’s adventure started with a hike to the World War II gun on George Island. The trek offered breathtaking views and a tangible sense of history, with the gun standing as a silent sentinel from the past. The island also played host to numerous songbirds – both families that nested here over the summer and southbound migrants.

After lunch, we visited the Tidelines Institute. It was a great opportunity to learn about the immersive nature education and field courses that happen there, as well as talking about homesteading and what it takes to live off the land in Southeast Alaska. The highlight was the Zodiac cruise through the Inian Islands. The waters were teeming with wildlife. We spotted playful sea otters floating on their backs, majestic Steller sea lions basking on the rocks, and an array of seabirds, including rhinoceros auklets and ancient murrelets. The cruise was a perfect blend of natural beauty and wildlife observation, wrapping up a day filled with exploration and discovery.
