The charming fishing village of Húsavík welcomed National Geographic Explorer today. Widely renowned for being surrounded by water thick with whales, it is also home to the Húsavík Whale Museum and serves as an access point to some of Icelands most celebrated attractions such as Ásbyrgi Canyon, Mývatn, and Goðafoss. Guests of National Geographic Explorer enjoyed the hospitality of the community that welcomed them with open arms.

Morning operations were split between Zodiac cruising and hiking within a unique private nature reserve in a remote east Iceland fjord. The Zodiac tours provided dramatic views of ancient lava cliffs jutting up hundreds of meters above the sea. The rock exposures were extraordinary and yielded insight to the volcanic processes that built this island. These rocks represent some of the older lava flows found in Iceland and numerous intrusions or dikes cut across the older flows. Hikers spent time learning about the human history of the island. Our guide explained the ongoing research at the archaeological site where Viking-era artifacts have been recovered. Our afternoon was filled with cruising time and with lectures by our naturalists on topics ranging from Iceland’s volcanic history to the marine mammals of the north Atlantic.
