Soon after breakfast, National Geographic Sea Lion mobilized for the morning’s exploration of Ideal Cove on Mitkof Island. This “boardwalk” trail winds its way through a beautiful sample of the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest on the planet. There was a faster, more strenuous hike that went for about four miles, as well as several shorter walks to a beautiful lake.

During lunch we repositioned to the fishing town of Petersburg, also on Mitkof Island, just off of Frederick Sound. This gave us an opportunity to explore the town, the fishing industry, and the local environment. Soon it was time to leave toward our stop for the next morning. We were treated an awesome sunset before we retired for the evening!
