Today we explored the frozen side of the land of fire and ice. We boarded buses right after breakfast from the dock in the small port town of Djupivogur. We split up into three groups as this area does not have a large tourism industry and we took all their buses for the day. The photo bus stopped in many places throughout the day including along a stunning black sand beach and up a hill for a look behind a beautiful waterfall.

The other main option of the day was to visit the ice lagoon of Jokulsarlon. We boarded landing craft better known as “duck boats” to go for a short cruise among the spectacular icebergs grounded out in the lagoon. We also saw a few harbor seals and some seabirds feeding in the area.

The other main event of the day was a chance to spend time on the Vatnajokull Glacier. We could choose to either explore the glacier by snowmobile or by super jeep. It was a bit foggy during our time on the glacier but it was just a fun experience to spend time on the fourth largest ice cap in area and the third largest by volume in the world!
