Our day in Kagoshima was unforgettable, with Sakurajima’s towering volcano setting a dramatic tone. Our first stop was the peaceful town of Chiran, known for its preserved samurai district. Walking along Samurai Lane, we admired ancient homes and gardens that have survived for over 250 years. Each garden, designed with “borrowed landscaping,” artfully incorporated the surrounding mountains and trees into the scene, creating a deep sense of harmony with nature.
We also visited Sengan-en, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous Japanese garden. It is a prime example of a feudal lord’s garden, featuring classical elements like ponds, streams and shrines, all framed by stunning views of Sakurajima. We followed this with a memorable visit to the Chiran Tokko Museum.
