We started our day in the north of Magdalena Bay, close to the town of Lopez Mateos. This is the preferred area for calving grey whales and where our hearts were warmed by seeing the caring mothers and their newborn baby gray whales. The babies would playfully hop on top of mama’s back and make their first attempts at spy-hopping. But baby action was not monopolized by whales, we also saw baby dolphins accompanied by their families, who decided to join the pelicans, cormorants, and ospreys in a feeding frenzy with the mangroves and the dunes as a backdrop.
Cruising the narrowest area of the bay, the Hull Canal, was eventful. We had dolphins riding our bow, various sightings of more mama and baby whale pairs, and lots of marine birds all under the blue skies and the warm Baja sun.
There was still more to discover walking on the sand dunes of Sand Dollar Beach where we all had a moment to reflect on the wonderful trip we had and to start thinking about where our next adventure will take us.
The night closed with a slideshow that displayed everyone’s best pictures. It was a perfect ending to a perfect expedition.
