Today was the first sea day of our journey to Antarctica. Our journey started yesterday with the flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia.

We had a full day at sea as we headed across the infamous Drake Passage. Today was rather windy, but there was a benefit to the weather. It was a great day to observe the birds of the Southern Ocean. Albatrosses, petrels, and shearwaters soared above the waves, visible through almost every window and porthole on the ship. For a birder, advanced or beginner, it was a beautiful day to look out the window and enjoy the beauty of some of the largest birds.

Our wonderful team also gave some great presentations. Kim Nesbitt offered the first talk of the voyage, “Smartphone Photography.” Alice Skehel gave a talk about Southern Ocean seabirds, the perfect topic for a day like today. Last but not least was Ricky Qi, our wonderful National Geography photographer with his talk, “The Stories We Tell.”

Today was truly a wonderful day to spend on National Geographic Endurance. She is quite magnificent.
