Misty Fjords more than lived up to its name, engulfing us in low hanging mist as we twisted and turned through the narrow fjord before finally dropping anchor in its northern-most terminus, God’s Pocket. Our watchful eyes remained vigilant for wildlife on the horizon whilst marveling at the sheer immensity of the towering granite walls around us, some over 3,000 feet tall.
It seemed only fitting to start the morning with a humbling Zodiac cruise. Harbor seals and harlequin ducks poked their faces out of the mist to make their presence known. Waterfalls towered above us, spilling icy cold snowmelt hundreds of feet, and adding to the brilliantly clear freshwater layer that on clear days offers a lens through which to view the depths below.
No stop here would be complete without a leisurely afternoon kayak paddle, punctuated by refreshingly cool short rains and beautiful sunshine. Meanwhile, our vigilance was finally rewarded. Concealing our glee as best we could, the announcement was made that two brown bears were spotted frolicking along the shallow shoreline. A tough act to follow, but as Leonardo debuted our guest slideshow, we were reminded of just how wonderful our week on National Geographic Sea Bird has been.
