This was a nice cool morning, just perfect to explore the rainforest before breakfast. We boarded our fleet of skiffs and we headed towards a little black water creek called Yanayaquillo which is home to many types of birds and river dolphins! In the early hours there are all types of sounds, some from birds and others from insects.

As we explored Yanayaquillo Creek we encountered our first troop of squirrel monkeys and and saddle-backed tamarins. They were foraging and running along the branches of trees. When you spot a troop of squirrel monkeys you do not find just the monkeys, but behind them there are a number of birds following. As insects are disturbed by the monkeys, insect-eating birds are always around. This little creek has large trees on both sides. A lot of them are fruiting right now and luring creatures that were the highlight of this morning. On these trees we had a flock of chestnut eared aracaris and the magnificent white throated toucan quite relaxed in front of us.

We’ve just started the day with so many sightings. After breakfast we had another outing with unique sightings. This time we spotted a two toed sloth! I’ve been here many times and this is the first time in my life I got to see this elusive creature. Minutes later we spotted the most charming bird of this forest, the electric blue plum throated cotinga.

In the late afternoon we explored the primary rainforest and we also had a skiff ride for bird watching. Both outings were fantastic because of the creatures of the forest and the forest itself with it’s giant trees that are the soul of this Amazon rainforest.
