After anchoring at Pavlof Harbor this morning, our guests and expedition staff set out to explore the area by kayak and expedition landing craft.
We took advantage of high tide to motor up a salmon stream to the base of a beautiful waterfall. With salmon leaping out of the water around us, we took in the natural beauty of this area, watched seaplanes fly overhead, and observed a variety of birdlife. Guests spotted mergansers, bald eagles, and an American dipper.
After a beautiful morning, National Geographic Sea Bird entered Chatham Strait. Sailing north, guests and staff took advantage of the warm—and sunny—weather to spot wildlife from the bow. At sunset, we spotted a group of humpback whales practicing cooperative bubble-net feeding, one of nature’s most spectacular wildlife behaviors. Up to 10 individual whales were diving and surfacing together in their search for food. We were lucky to spend time watching and photographing these animals as the golden light faded to a pink sunset over the mountains.
