Our day on board National Geographic Venture began by arriving into the harbor of Petersburg, cruising past countless fishing boats geared up for the summer salmon purse seining season.
Today offered us the opportunity to explore this famous fishing town through a variety of tours, from adventurous mountain hikes to walks learning about muskegs, leisurely bike rides and cultural tours. For those that were willing to embrace Southeast Alaska’s finest liquid sunshine, we enjoyed views of the spectacular low tide, unique carnivorous plants, and tastes of hand-picked salmonberries. With our waterproof gear tested, we returned to the ship to sail away from the docks and prepare for our evening recap and famous crab feast dinner.
With Naturalist Alex Harper poised to present on Alaska’s often overlooked “uncharismatic” megafauna, the champions of charismatic megafauna, killer whales, lured us out of the lounge and onto the bow. After a little patience, we were treated to fabulous sightings of these incredible animals, including a full breach and several very close passes by the ship.
Wildlife can never be guaranteed, which makes it all the more wonderful when we get to experience moments like this.
