Today was a day dedicated to the most
charismatic animal of the archipelago: the Galápagos
giant tortoise. Early in the morning we visited the Charles Darwin Station
located in the town of Puerto Ayora in Santa Cruz Island. Here, we found the
breeding center where we were able to see different species of tortoises that
belong to different islands. Later in the morning, we visited a local school, a
sugarcane farm, and an amazing, huge lava tube located in the highlands of
Santa Cruz. In the afternoon, we moved to Rancho El Manzanillo for lunch before
exploring the forests surrounding the farm and keeping our eyes peeled for some
old tortoises that might be roaming around the water ponds. We ended our day on
board with a great music and dance performance by some wonderful visiting
musicians who shared part of the local culture.
