We’ve been cruising throughout the windy night to get the National Geographic Islander to the island of San Cristobal where we’ll go looking for the northernmost visitor site there called Punta Pitt. By 6:00 a.m. we dropped anchor and our adventurers are ready to disembark. We rode the Zodiacs along the coast where we know the tidal zones offer a lot to see. The vegetation there collected many red footed boobies, the coast was full of bachelor sea lions, and the green of the sea weed at the intertidal area gave all of us a good idea of the richness of the place.
We disembarked on the green beach of Punta Pitt, sea lions all over the place. The day seems to be overcast a bit, but it feels ideal to walk. As we walked up to the highest part of the hill, the view encouraged everyone to keep on going.
Soon we reached the area where red footed boobies were much closer, very good for pictures. The endemic mockingbirds in San Cristobal were around and we were trying to get pictures while they were there. The scenery and landscaping couldn’t be better. It was great that we decided to do this walk and the timing was appropriate as we were back at the beach in time for a quick dip.
The National Geographic Islander is heading to Kicker Rock, Leon Dormido in Spanish, our next destination in the afternoon. It has a great reputation for snorkeling and soon enough our Zodiacs are out and our adventurers enter the 70 degree F water, excited because they know this could be the best opportunity to see different species of sharks.
And yes they are there right away, black tipped reef sharks, young Galapagos sharks, spotted eagle rays, and all kinds of tropical and reef fish. It was so good that the explorers asked for another round and of course we were ready to go again.
We are back on board and it is hard to believe that our adventure here in this beautiful place is almost over. We are now circumnavigating Leon Dormido and chatting about the excellence of the expedition. Our hearts are full of great memories and we are grateful for all nature gave us along this great expedition in the Galapagos Islands.
