The kingdom of tall green trees surrounds us everywhere we go. The wide river brings rafts of vegetation and large trees from farther upstream in the Upper Amazon. People travel in small boats and dug out canoes along the river. This is the typical scene of the Amazon rainforest and its rivers.

This morning after breakfast, we visited a small community called San Francisco. Here, our guides took us to explore the village in order to get to know the people of the Amazon rainforest and their life in this remote place. This is a village of farmers and fishermen. Farmers produce cassava, bananas, palms and many types of tropical fruits. Fishermen on the other hand explore the rivers and tributaries in order to bring food back home.

Once we visited San Francisco we navigated down the the Marañón river to reach the point of convergence with the Ucayali River. This is the traditional beginning of the great Amazon River! At the moment we reached this important geographical location, we celebrated with an Amazon toast with an iconic Peruvian drink, the Pisco Sour. Our exploration has only just begun, and there is more to explore in the afternoon and the days to come.

Our destination for the second part of the day was Clavero Lake. The forest surrounding this lake is home to several types of egrets, from the large great egret to the small snowy egret. There are several species of raptors such as the black-collared hawks and the area is teeming with three-toed sloths!

What a fascinating day!
