Today we spent an unforgettable day exploring Santa Cruz Island. In the morning, we visited the Galápagos National Park Breeding Center, where we had the unique opportunity to observe giant tortoises up close. We were able to see different species of land tortoises, distinguished by their saddleback-shaped shells, which are adaptations to their home islands. It was fascinating to also observe the baby tortoises, each marked with colored numbers on their shells. Each color represented a specific island, helping in the organization and care of these young tortoises as they grow safely in captivity.
After our visit to the breeding center, we traveled to the highlands of Santa Cruz, where we visited Ochoa Farm. Here, we learned about the use of hydroponic technology, an innovative method that allows farmers to grow vegetables while conserving water. The produce harvested here is used for local consumption and supplies certain vessels operating around the islands.
Our next stop was El Manzanillo Ranch, where we enjoyed a delicious traditional lunch surrounded by nature. Afterward, we had the chance to observe giant tortoises in their natural habitat. We spotted many individuals seeking refuge under the bushes and shaded areas to avoid overheating, as their dark shells absorb a significant amount of sun. It was a truly remarkable day filled with learning, conservation, and unforgettable encounters with one of the Galápagos’ most iconic species.
