There’s a saying—or at least there should be—that if you don’t like the weather in the fjords of Patagonia, just wait a minute. Today was a sumptuous display of exactly what makes this place so geographically and meteorologically fascinating.
The clouds lifted early in the morning to reveal freshly dusted peaks bordering the Agostini fjord system. We made our way to shore at Seno Hyatt while the dive team ventured off into a neighboring kelp forest teeming with a multitude of crab species—it seems this Hyatt Hotel has beds enough for a few kings. Upon the team’s surfacing, the peaks were gone, tucked in again by an ever-thickening blanket of snow.
The sun made itself known as we cruised toward Isla Laberinto—an aptly-named gateway to a labyrinthine archipelago filled with wonders, including the green-backed firecrown hummingbirds and Magellanic penguins sighted at Isla Jane near Bahia Drew’s stunning waterfalls. Here we experienced all four seasons in as many minutes: flurries of rain, sleet, hail, snow, blue skies, and rainbows.
Our cocktail hour concluded with a leaping Peale’s dolphin leading us into another incredible meal as the alpine glow settled on its preferred Patagonian peaks. Onward to Francisco Coloane National Marine Park!
