Kia Ora from Aotearoa, New Zealand. Today is the first day of our expedition to the amazing Sub-Antarctic Islands of New Zealand.
We departed from the south coast of New Zealand in Dunedin and spent the day at sea. We got acquainted with the ship and the team of naturalists. From the observation decks in the morning, we started spotting shearwaters, albatrosses, prions, and petrels.
As soon as we arrived at the Snares Islands, we were instantly surrounded by massive flocks of birds. We Zodiac-cruised into the evening and were greeted by groups of crested penguins, albatrosses, and shearwaters. As the evening progressed, so, too, did the amounts and types of birds coming out to fly – or swim! This evening certainly set the tone for our journey onward.
