A thick blanket of fog with an occasional dark silhouetted chunk of land was all we could see as National Geographic Quest approached our morning anchorage. The fog slowly lifted during our Zodiac cruises through the numerous islets making up the Inian Islands. This is one of the staff and crew’s all-time favorite cruises for the sheer abundance of wildlife that can be seen in such a short duration. Numerous Steller sea lion haul outs were observed, heard and smelt, making it a full sensory experience. A raft of over ten sea otters was found tucked into a picturesque kelp-filled bay, while soft ball sized white heads of bald eagles speckled the hillsides.

The afternoon was equally as entertaining and included a circumnavigation of Shaw Island via kayaks as well as forest walks along worn brown bear trails. During dinner we cruised into the narrow waters of Idaho Inlet and a bear was spotted in a meadow, just as our expedition leader intended.
