Today marked our first full day in Southeast Alaska. We visited the Tongass National Forest, a protected area with abundant biodiversity. Before our arrival we saw several humpback whales along the bow of the ship; a promising sign of more wildlife spotting to come!
Once we reached our destination, guests were provided with activities of varying levels, from long or fast walks, to a short photo walk. All options were a great way to see flora and fauna among giant trees like Sitka spruce and western hemlock. We also saw traces of bears along the way and spotted eagles, some salmon, and even red squirrels. Many plants are now are in full bloom and are loaded with edible fruit, like salmon berries, and blueberries.
Back onboard we had our traditional Lindblad Expedition’s recap. Today our undersea specialist showed us the amazing underwater world via the video captured this afternoon.
Dinner was served as the sun slowly set. We eagerly anticipate tomorrow’s new adventure, and discover the ecology shaped by Southeast Alaska’s temperate rainforest.
