The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on January 18, 2017.

Today we visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trinidad, perhaps the most beautiful city in all of Cuba. While some chose to first go to the Sierra del Escambray to hike the trails in Topes de Collantes, others chose to spend the morning exploring the cobblestone streets, palaces and plazas, as well as the rich architecture of the city itself.

The afternoon brought most of us to the Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills) for a look at the role cane sugar has played in the history of Cuba. Here there is a strong connection to Africa through the use of slaves to work the cane fields. Their descendants still form a large part of the rich cultural heritage that makes Cuba what it is today.
