After being captivated by a breathtaking humpback whale sighting earlier in the day, our group of Wild Iceland Escape travelers currently aboard National Geographic Explorer visited Vigur Island in Iceland.
As our ship approached the island, we were greeted by the sight of traditional eiderdown farms, where two local farmers and their young son meticulously collect the soft down from eider duck nests. This rare and valuable material is used to craft some of the world's finest bedding, showcasing a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
The island teemed with life; Arctic terns swooped overhead, their sharp cries adding to the serene yet vibrant atmosphere. Black guillemots, with their striking black plumage and vivid red legs, dotted the rocky shores, diving expertly for fish. Amidst the grassy meadows, puffins waddled comically, their colorful beaks a sharp contrast to the lush green backdrop.
We marveled at the intricate ecological balance maintained on Vigur Island as we ate our fourth version of Icelandic Happy Marriage cake.
